The goal of dog impulse control dog training isn’t only to have an easily controlled dog. It is to have a well-behaved dog who can be both obedient and fun. But if ever you were to cut corners here, if your dog were to adopt an “impulsive” behavior, wouldn’t you want to find dog training tips that would allow him or her to control those impulses? So here are some dog training tips for you to ponder.
As mentioned in Part One, teaching a dog how to behave in impulsive is part of the whole dog training process. And while it would be great if you were able to teach your dog without having to resort to any techniques at all, unfortunately that is just not possible. So what can you do instead to teach your dog impulse control without teaching him tricks? Actually, there are quite a few things you can try.
One of them is to teach your dog using a simple reward system. By using simple dog treats (not licks of your finger), you can teach the dog impulse control, especially when it comes to calming down. The key is to not provide a punishment when your dog needs to calm down. As your dog learns to calm down using this method, you can begin to gradually phase out punishing your dog, making him feel rewarded as he uses the front door to get out of the house.
Say for example that you are going to go on a date and you have asked your dog to accompany you. However, while you are walking towards your house, your dog keeps jumping out of the bushes. Instead of getting upset and scaring your dog off, simply use the door as he tends to do, which prompts him to follow. You will teach him the door is his only way out.
Another excellent way to teach him this is with clicker training. You should know how to use clicker training, as it is very effective. For a start, clicker training makes your dog associate a click with his good behavior. When he receives the click, he knows he has done the right thing. You can then use treats and praise to reinforce this every time your dog does something right.
If your dog is unable to control his urination, you could try using a small dog treat and saying “pee pee”, which is easy to teach your dog. The dog will eventually learn to empty his bladder when you tell him to. For more effective ways to teach self-control, you may want to take a look at some of the dog training books. There are some excellent books out there that deal with this topic. You will also find that if you search for self-control in the dog’s title, there are plenty of articles you can read that have specific information on how to achieve it.
The other way you can teach him self-control is to use a leash. A leash can easily be placed around your dog’s neck and you will be able to control him just by walking by his side. The dog will soon understand that when you put your hand under his coat, you mean to give him a treat. You can also use treats and rewards with the leash, in order to teach your dog a concept of obeying your commands. He may not always fully understand what you are trying to say, but with some effort, he will learn to obey you by always being aware of where you place your hands.
To train your dog for self-control, you need to teach him the sitting command. Once you have worked with your dog for some time, he will easily understand what you want. During training, make sure that you always walk next to your dog, or at least in the same direction. This helps the dog to associate a certain behavior with an action. As long as you keep praising him when he complies with your commands, your dog will quickly learn that sitting on the command is a good thing.
