How can one be so assertive and yet still have a dog like my Mastiff who will always want to be the boss around other dogs? I was actually thinking the other day about this and wondered if maybe there were any “how do I stop my dog being aggressive to other dogs” tips out there that I could try. My Mastiff has been such an aggressive dog in the past that other dogs have not warmed up to him at all…and I don’t think he ever will!
And I’m going to tell you from first hand experience, that this is NOT what you want. If you don’t have a dog that is well behaved (which Mastiffs are not) then it’s like trying to stop running with the running bulls. They are just going to keep running after you and won’t slow down. You are trying to catch them and when they catch you…spit in their face!
That’s exactly how these other dogs treat you. The same thing happened to me. But unlike the Mastiff, I’m not a professional trainer and I have no clue on how to fix this. So, here’s how I did it:
I had to start taking them out more often to see how they reacted and that worked better. I would also put my dog on a schedule and only let him out of the house for a certain amount of time. This really helped with some of their aggressive dog training tricks. But it was not good enough.
I tried taking my Mastiff out for walks and the problem got even worse. They would chase each other and they were just plain mean! My Mastiff loved to bark and shout at other dogs and even humans. They were out of control and it was driving me crazy! I needed help.
I found that by getting some professional advice on how do I stop my dog being aggressive to other dogs, I could finally tame him. Now, he’s not as aggressive, but he can be. I’m not saying he’s forgiven, but he’s not as aggressive to other people as he used to be. I still get upset when he barks, but I am learning. And I think he sees that I am doing the same. He knows that I am a changed dog and he respects that.
There are some pros and cons to training your dog like this too. One is that you need to be committed to the process – it can take weeks or months. Another is that you need to have patience with your dog. You will not be able to train him overnight like in the books you might read, but with consistent effort you will be rewarded with a more docile dog.
And most important of all is that if you are not ready to train him yourself, there are resources out there where you can hire a professional dog trainer to train your dog. But if you do decide to hire a trainer, make sure you go to a reputable and legitimate trainer who has had plenty of experience in aggressive dog training tricks. If you have a dog like mine that has issues, I highly recommend that you do whatever you can to find a trainer who will work with you to help solve your problems.
You can stop my dog from being aggressive to other dogs by using “The Golden Rule” with him. This is a tried and true training technique that can go a long way to helping modify undesirable behavior in your dog. Just as the “Dog Whisperer” can change a dog’s behavior by using simple spoken commands, so can you teach your dog the “Golden Rule.” Here is an explanation of the “Golden Rule” for dog training tricks: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
You would not beat up someone else and expect them not to like you and to treat you how you would like to be treated. So why would you expect your dog not to have the same respect for you that other people have for you? The dog would also not be acting out of any desire to hurt you or show aggression toward you when you obey this command. The dog is simply following a command that he knows is right and fair for him and others.
If you would like to learn more dog training tricks and ways to get your dog to behave in the manner that you want him to follow, there are many books available at the bookstore or online that will help you with this. There are also videos and e-books available on the internet for you to download to your computer. In this day and age, it is very important that you learn how your dog is feeling and how you can correct any undesirable behavior that he may exhibit. By learning these dog training tricks, you will be able to train your dog to live up to your expectations.
