How To Correct Aggressive Dog Behavior By Understanding The Reverse Direction Technique

If you have a dog that is acting out of the ordinary or even aggressive, then you want to know about some of the most common dog training tricks that can help you solve this problem. There are many training techniques to teach your dog and each has its own level of success depending on how consistent the dog is with the behavior. In addition, there are several dog training tricks that can be used to help control some aggressive behaviors. Here are some of the most commonly known dog training tricks that can be used to help correct aggressive dog behavior.

Leash walk/retriever training: This is one of the simplest and quickest methods to train your dog. You start off by walking your dog on a leash. The dog follows you with the leash and when you call him over, he must trot back to you. If he does not follow, you must treat him very gently so that he learns to walk properly. Over time, your dog will learn to walk properly without using the leash. You can also use the walk and the pull (retreat) method for teaching your dog to stay within the reach of the leash.

Reverse Direction Technique: This is another simple training method that teaches your dog to follow you instead of leading you. You begin by pulling towards you on the leash. As your dog pulls towards you, pull the leash away and pet your dog until he becomes calm. When he pulls again toward you, treat him again until he learns to walk calmly in the opposite direction from you. You can even practice the reverse direction technique when you are walking with someone else.

Walk Together With Other People: Most dogs need to be trained to walk beside people, not lead them. If you walk with another person, your dog will learn to stop pulling. Start walking side by side with the other person. When you go to the park or anywhere with other people, keep your dog on a leash and move along with them. The dog will learn to see another dog pulling and he will keep walking in the same direction with you.

Follow-Me Rule: This is a good method that will teach your dog to respect the presence of others. When you are out in public, you should keep your dog on a leash. Let others pass, while you do your own thing. If you go by a dog, and he shows aggression towards you, get out of the way. You need to show your dog that he has to obey your command to follow you and not another dog.

Be Patient: One very important tip on how to train an older dog to walk on a leash is to be patient. Patience is very important for the dog training. He needs to learn that you will stop if he pulls too hard. When you are walking with a dog, he may seem like he is just going to take advantage of you, but when you go to put your weight on him and pull on the leash, he learns that it is not acceptable to pull. Do not give up.

Be Careful: You have to avoid any situation that might make your old dog feel threatened. Remember that the leash is used for walking and not fighting so be careful when handling him. Your dog will know what to expect and will try to pull even harder. Do not give in. Do not give up when he tries to pull you off the leash.

One more important thing to note about how to train an older dog to walk on a leash is to start the reverse direction technique while you are training. If the dog pulls on the leash in the forward direction, just reverse the direction and keep walking. Repeat this exercise until he understands that pulling on the leash is not okay.
