Teaching your dog how to settle is a very important part of dog training. Most people will not have to worry about teaching their dog this trick until they have a problem with one of their pets. This is when you realize that sometimes, you cannot be more consistent than nature when it comes to dog training. When you do find a solution to your dog’s problem, the dog may never fully learn how to come when called. That means it will most likely be up to you to try to teach it to come whenever it does not seem to want to go.
There are really three main ways to train a dog to stop nipping at your shoes. There are various kinds of dog training tricks for you to try. But the trickiest trick for some people to teach their dogs is the “sit” command. But even if most people think of dogs as Being able to learn human speech, there really are only two basic kinds of commands that all dogs are taught to obey.
These dog training tips can all be found on the internet. A quick search on Google will turn up several articles that discuss these tips. The three most important tips are to use positive reinforcement, use praise and negative reinforcement. If you don’t know how to do all three of them, then your best bet is to hire a professional dog trainers. Here is what they have to say:
Positive Reinforcement Training – Using positive reinforcement is a great way to train your dog to stop biting your shoes. Most of all, always praise your dog the minute it picks up its toys or scooting its tail after it does something you like. Your dog wants to know it is doing the right thing. If your dog understands the praise and rewards, then the next time it will have an accident, it won’t feel so bad about it. This also prevents it from getting stressed out over having an accident because now, just by looking at you or your training methods, it knows it is doing the right thing.
Punishment Training – Using negative conditioning like screaming at your dog when it does something wrong is a dog training trick that some dog trainers use. I don’t recommend this as a way to train your dog. I used it once when I was trying to teach my dog how to jump on its bed. I stuck his nose into the bed, stuck his head between the sheets, and screamed at him for 5 minutes straight. When he finally came out of his bed, I let him off the bed and he seemed pretty happy about it. I do, however, recommend that you avoid using this punishment in a training session with your dog because you don’t want to shout at him every time he does something wrong.
Toy Training – Giving your dog a treat every time it sits or lies down can be a very effective form of dog training. I would suggest, however, that you start this training with treats that are small. Like I mentioned above, your dog wants to know it is doing the right thing because it gets a treat. It may even start to become excited about being rewarded and continue to do what it’s doing because of that. It’s kind of similar to physical stimulation.
First, you should set aside some time to practice the reward system. Get a couple of different toys, put them somewhere where your dog can see them every day, and start training. Each time you introduce a new toy, give the dog a treat. If you don’t see your dog using the toy as much, start removing the old one and replacing it with the new one. You’ll soon notice a significant improvement in the behavior of your dog and it will start to look forward to getting his next reward.
How to teach a dog to settle is not rocket science but it does take some patience and determination. Once your dog understands that sitting or laying down gets him treats and attention, he’ll soon be asking for your attention in that way too. Dog training can be frustrating but with patience, it can be easy.
