Teaching your dog how to close the door is part of dog training tricks. This is an important part because dogs are very unpredictable when it comes to how they react to things. Sometimes they want to greet you with their most excited greetings and other times they are not so happy. You need to train them how to react to certain events in order to successfully interact with others. Here are some dog training tricks that will teach your dog how to behave around the house.
Dogs are highly intelligent animals that learn at a fast pace. You can easily train a dog to close up its mouth, but for some reason, they never seem to want to. It is fun to encourage them to open their mouths for a treat when you have their attention. Usually you can use a small treat that your dog is already conditioned to consume.
To get started, place the treat just far enough away from your dog so that it will not be distracted by other things in the room. You do not want to trip over this. Then bring the dog into the room, turn on the clicking device (a bell or a clicker) and make a small fuss with your voice encouraging him to come to you. Praise the dog again using your voice and then release the treats as he starts to stand in front of you.
Another dog training trick that you can teach him is how to sit. This is a great trick to teach if your dog is only able to lie down for a few minutes at a time. The idea is to have him lie down in a comfortable position for 10 minutes and then call out “sit.” After he sits, give him lots of praise so he learns that this behavior is desirable. After a few times of doing this, he will soon lie down all the time without any attention given to him.
You will need lots of patience and discipline when you are trying to teach your dog new behaviors. Dogs take time to learn new skills. While it may be tempting to try to implement these new skills during your first training session, wait until later. Be prepared to experiment with different behaviors to see which one he responds best to.
When your dog is showing improved behavior, you can proceed with the next part of this article. That is introducing positive reinforcement with treats during your training sessions. By using praise with the command word, the dog will be rewarded for behaving in a desirable manner. In addition, the dog will learn that good behavior will be rewarded. He will also be encouraged to repeat the behavior that got him the reward in the past.
If the dog does not immediately lie down when called out to get in the house, give him a pat or verbal reward for sitting still. Praise him each time he stays where he should. If he starts to move around while you are teaching him to stand still, you can redirect his movements by saying, “Sit,” or “Stay where you are.” This will start to reinforce that lying down is the behavior you want from him.
To teach this dog control, you will need a clicker and a praise or treat for good behavior. Have the dog lie down in a comfortable place while you give the clicker a positive response. When the clicker is given, immediately give him a treat or praise. Repeat this several times until he understands what you want from him.
