Your dog probably loves being taken for walks and you don’t want to have to worry about how to train a dog to sleep in bed. You’ve worked hard to make your dog feel like a big pet and he has definitely lap up all the love you give him. However, if your dog is a morning dog, there are some behaviors that need to be corrected as soon as possible. It is important that you train your dog how to have good, healthy sleep habits before he gets older because it will prevent health problems down the road.
First of all, you need to recognize that dogs sleep when they are comfortable and not when they are bored. This means that you shouldn’t take him out for long walks if he is dragging his behind or jumping on people. Your dog will calm down faster if he is just running around and playing. If he is laying in bed still, he will be restless and you will need to take him out an hour later to let him calm down.
The good news is that many dogs have the ability to fall asleep sitting up. You can train him to do this by using dog training tricks like lying down and rolling over. Just remember to make sure that you don’t hurt your dog because he may be hurt if you pull on his back while he is lying down. This can get bad and seriously hurt your dog if he is startled.
If your dog is too excited to lie down and roll over, you may want to start using dog training tricks that teach him to relax more. One of these tricks involves sitting down and then having your dog sit next to you with his nose to the back and his eyes closed. When he starts sniffing, put your hand on his nose and move it closer to his face until you feel a slight relaxation.
Your dog will most likely start to roll over on his back and that is when you will need to teach him to go to sleep on his stomach. First, however, you will want to get him used to lying down first. To do this, put a dog bed or a blanket on top of his heavy body so he can lay there and try to stay still. Then take your dog’s tail between your leg and put it right behind his belly button, making sure it is pointing toward the ground. He should begin to lie down on his stomach and you can begin to teach him how to sleep fast.
As he is lying on his stomach, gently push his tail side-to-side so that his whole body is lifted off the floor. If he does not understand what you are doing, continue to do this for a few minutes. It will take a while, but eventually your dog will get the idea that lying down on his back means he is comfortable and sleepy. Once he learns how to sleep in this manner, continue with the other dog training tricks listed above.
If your dog is too tired to sleep, then you may need to do something to help him out. One of the dog training tricks for helping your dog sleep is to take a warm bath for him before bedtime. This will make him feel more relaxed and he will be ready for sleep. You can also add in some dog treats and a bit of comfort to help make it easier for him to fall asleep.
When learning how to train a dog to sleep in a relaxed manner, remember to reward your dog when he responds positively to a command. Your dog will have a much easier time at night by following your simple commands. It is important, however, to be firm and consistent in your instructions. If you are not consistent, then your dog will learn to expect the next command without waiting for the prior one to happen.
